Transport Canada Drone Operations Guide
Key Regulatory Changes (Effective June 2019):
Since June 2019, Transport Canada has significantly updated its guidelines governing drone operations across Canada, impacting where, when, and by whom various drone models can be flown.
Under these updated regulations, drones weighing over 250 grams are now required to be registered with Transport Canada. Additionally, operators must possess either a basic or advanced pilot certificate. A basic certificate has considerable limitations, especially when operating within three miles of any restricted airspace.
Pilots holding an advanced certificate benefit from greater flexibility, enabling flight in most areas provided all relevant regulations are followed. For operations within controlled or restricted airspace, advanced pilots are required to secure prior authorization from NAV Canada, a process typically approved within 24 hours.
